7 Things You Didn’t Know About Dinosaurs.

A large dinosaur looking out over the ocean and a magnificent sunset

Here at Alba Shed we are proud of all of the life-sized models that we create for our clients. That said, one of the types of models that we love more than anything else has to be the dinosaurs.

After all, they are a fascinating glimpse into a past that none of us got to see. But what about the real deal?

Think that you know everything that there is to know about the scaly giants from yesteryear? We have put together 7 things that you might be surprised to learn about dinosaurs.

Some of them may not have existed

There are some palaeontologists (that’s dinosaur experts to me and you) who believe that some of the most popular species of dinosaur never even existed. This includes Triceratops and Brontosaurus. They think that these dinosaurs have been confused with similar species, and in the case of the triceratops, this has been backed up by never finding a complete skeleton.

An interesting fact about humans

Okay, so this particular fact is more about humans than dinosaurs. It is thought that as many as 4 in 10 people believe that humans and dinosaurs were on the planet at the same time. Something that is categorically not true, unless you get up close and personal with our life sized models!

Could we see a real life Jurassic Park?

One of the best known palaeologists in the world Jack Homer was not only ground breaking expert in his field, but also acted as a consultant to the Jurassic Park films. So enamoured with the idea of this dinosaur park that he decided to create his very own real life dinosaur. It seems that he is approaching it on a much smaller scale, whereby he is trying to create a chickenosauras, a hybrid of a small dinosaur and the modern chicken.

We are not sure that this is a bird that we would be able to deep fry!

Bigger than the T-Rex

The T-Rex is one of the most recognised dinosaur out there, all thanks to their rather impressive size (as well as their hilarious tiny arms). But there were dinosaurs out there that were much bigger than the T-Rex. These were called Sauropods and they were more than 200 feet long. So, impressive was their size that it was thought they could create a sonic boom simply from the speed that they whip their tails.

The bone wars

During the years of 1877 and 1892 there was a huge surge of discoveries in the world of dinosaurs. This was all thanks to a rivalry between two different scientists who were locked in some kind of battle. They stole, destroy and sabotaged each other’s work, but in the meantime they also discovered more than 140 species of dinosaurs.

The flying “dinosaurs”

Think about those flying dinosaurs that seem to litter the sky in films and books. What might surprise you is that these pterodactyls are not even dinosaurs, they are actually a different variety of reptiles known as pterosaurs. They were still rather impressive beasts though, with wingspans of as much as 40 feet in length, the size of a small airplane.

A modern relative

Birds are related to dinosaurs. Yep you heard us right. Birds are part of the clade super group which also includes dinosaurs. It is thought that birds came into existence the same time as their scaly cousins and whilst the dinosaurs didn’t make it to modern day, birds survived the extinction and are still thriving millions of years later!

So, there you go. 7 things that you may not have known about dinosaurs. As they haven’t lived on this planet for millions of years, the closes that you can get to dinosaurs now is by seeing one of our impressive life-sized models.

The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art and was buried with the emperor in 210–209 BC and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”7068″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Now there was a time when this sort of posthumous-protection was the reserve of the elite. New Welsh Dino!

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Paleontologists have uncovered an entirely new species of Dinosaur that lived in Wales around 200 million years ago.

“The dinosaur is approximately 200 million years old, the oldest Jurassic dinosaur ever found in the UK. It belongs to the theropod group of dinosaurs and is related to Tyrannosaurus rex, although our dinosaur was walking the earth about 130 million years earlier than its more well known cousin.

The new Welsh dinosaur is a completely new species, previously unknown to scientists, making this discovery even more exciting.”

Surely this was everyone’s favourite dinosaur when they were growing up!

As its name suggests the T-Rex was the undisputed king of the dinosaurs, an incredible carnivore and fearsome beast.

At Alba Shed we can confirm that T-Rex was indeed an impressive sight thanks to the life-sized model T-Rex heads that we have. These head make brilliant features in theme parks, restaurants and anywhere that wants to stand out from the crowd. And it’s not just the T-Rex, we also have his arch rival the proud, three horned Triceratops.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
